Climate change implications for water management

Climate change forecasts of rising temperatures and sea levels, and increased weather variability will undoubtedly have significant direct and indirect implications for water utilities.   Apart from the obvious impacts on water availability and energy prices, climate change may introduce further new risks such as seawater inundation of assets, and increase existing risks such as algal blooms, mains breaks and corrosion.

The Middle Way works with water authorities to:

  • Understand climate change risks and opportunities
  • Prepare inventories of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions
  • Measure carbon footprints
  • Become carbon neutral
  • Develop carbon management strategies
  • Report through national and state-based mandatory reporting regimes, and participate in voluntary programs including the Carbon Disclosure Project
